◎論題：　「テロに対する戦争」の伏線としての「地獄の黙示録」

◎報告要旨：
時を経るにつれて、映画「地獄の黙示録」はベトナム戦争についてのものというよりも、ますます米国の意識やそれが構成する「敵」についての作品として見えてくるようになった。この映画で描き出されたカーツの姿は、まぎれもなくアメリカの姿である。カーツはコンラッドの小説「闇の奥」の登場人物を原型としており、人物造形の仕方にはコッポラ監督独特の洞察力がうかがえる。というのも、このカーツは、アメリカの意識によって神話的に創りだされたサダム・フセインとオサマ・ビン・ラディンのようにに感じられるのだ。もちろん、カーツと同じく彼らはもともとはアメリカによって訓練された諜報部員であったが、その後アメリカの手には負えなくなって「偏見の極みをもって」命令を「終結」せざるを得なくなったのである。本報告では、他者性―「異邦人」、とりわけ「敵」―に対してアメリカが一貫して呈してきた姿勢をめぐる「地獄の黙示録」の意義を再検討したい。（原文は末尾を参照）

APOCALYPSE NOW AS AN ANTICIPATION OF THE ‘WAR ON TERRORISM’
As time passes, the film Apocalpse Now seems to be less and less about the Vietnam and more and more about American consciousness and its constitution of the ‘enemy’. The figure of Kurtz as portrayed in Apocalypse Now seems to be a singularly American figure, even though he is drawn from Conrad’s character in Heart of Darkness and there seems to be a strange prescience in the way Coppola has drawn this figure: this Kurtz, one feels, is both Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden as they have been mythologically created by American consciousness. And of course, like Kurtz, both of them were originally American trained operatives who became out of control and needed to have their commands ‘terminated with extreme prejudice’. In this paper, I will re-examine Apocalypse Now for what it has to tell us about the persistence of certain American attitudes towards otherness, the ‘foreign’ and most especially the ‘enemy’.
